Improving the Marketplace
Focuses on improving marketplace visibility, aggregation of demand, and rethinking risk to accelerate growth.
The Challenge
A well-functioning marketplace for ocean data, information, and knowledge is critical for sustainable ocean development. However, industry leaders have identified key challenges:
Public Funding
Public funding remains the primary source for ocean observations.
Private Investment
Private investment in the Ocean Enterprise is growing but focuses largely on research rather than long-term observation operations.
Economic Value
The economic value of ocean technologies, data, and services is not widely recognized.
Why IT matters
To Unlock the full potential of the Ocean Enterprise, we must:
Expand Market Visibility
Elevate the recognition of ocean data and services.
Aggregate Demand
Connect stakeholders to create sustainable business models.
Rethink Risk
Encourage investment in long-term ocean observation efforts.
Improving the Marketplace: In the U.S. and Beyond
NOAA Ocean Enterprise Accelerators - One Example from the U.S.
Through its Ocean Enterprise program, NOAA is accelerating the development, commercialization, and implementation of innovative ocean data technologies and services to benefit the U.S. and the growing Blue Economy.
Across the U.S., Ocean Enterprise Accelerators support small businesses and entrepreneurs developing commercial solutions for ocean observation including, coastal management, defense, infrastructure, water quality, aquaculture, shipping, ports, and tourism.
Beyond
Recognizing the importance of developing a fully mature ocean enterprise, we're committed to global partnerships and international growth. We welcome proposals for ocean-related projects and collaborations from outside the U.S.
